A simple, low-carb meal on a wooden table.
Our standing

We are readers, cooks, and patients — not your doctor.

Vitalaro is an independent educational project. We pay attention to the long-running work of Dr. Richard Bernstein, the endocrinology literature on low-carbohydrate approaches to diabetes care, and the unglamorous experience of cooking the same dinner on a Tuesday in February.

Nothing here is medical advice. If you take insulin or other glucose-lowering medications, please loop in a clinician before changing how you eat — diet changes often require dose changes, sometimes quickly.

What we believe

Five quiet principles.

If you only ever read these, you'd have the whole site.

01

Numbers beat opinions

The glucose meter is the only nutritionist that knows you personally. We defer to it whenever there's a disagreement.

02

Simple beats clever

A boring repertoire of meals you actually cook is better than a brilliant one you don't. Repetition is the secret ingredient.

03

Whole foods, plain language

If you can't picture where the ingredient came from, that's worth a second thought. We avoid jargon and gimmicks.

04

No products to sell

We don't sell supplements, courses, coaching, or affiliate links. The newsletter is free; the advice doesn't bend to a sponsor.

05

Respect the human

Eating well over decades is a relationship, not a project. We're allergic to all-or-nothing framing and to anyone who sells it.

06

Update when wrong

If we learn we got something wrong, we fix the page and say so at the bottom. Quietly, but visibly.

A quick note on Dr. Bernstein

The shoulders we stand on.

Dr. Richard Bernstein is a physician who, having lived with type 1 diabetes himself since the 1940s, spent decades refining a low-carb approach to glucose control — first for his own care, then in a clinical practice that has now spanned generations of patients. His contribution to the field, and to ordinary people trying to live well with diabetes, is hard to overstate.

Vitalaro is not affiliated with Dr. Bernstein or his practice. We're admirers, like a great many people, and we try to do justice to the practical spirit of his work in everything we publish.
